I live near Battersea park and I often go there to study the trees. The twisting and bulging of tree trunks is a real obsession of mine. For the trunk of this tree I scratched into the wet oil with the end of the paintbrush to emphasise the texture, and also to give movement to the surrounding leaves.
This is one of my favourite frame moulds to use, because it has a beautiful weight to it, and I think it complements this painting very well.
