A print of plums, taken from a watercolour study from Specimens of Nature, a volume of botanical study written by the Italian naturalist and artist, Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522 - 1605).

Aldrovandi is often referred to as the father of natural history studies. In 1561, he became the first professor of natural sciences at the University of Bologna. Under his leadership, a centre for study of plant and animal life was established, and with botanical artists such as Jacopo Ligozzi, he put together 18 volumes on natural history, containing 2,900 watercolours studies of specimens that were kept in his natural history ‘museum’, the University’s botanical garden, founded in 1587.

This print would work particularly well hung above a kitchen counter, kitchen table, or as part of a collection of paintings making up a salon hang wall displaying a varied collection of artworks.
